Gay Sons & Mothers

For a long time, families haven’t wanted to talk about their LGBTQ+ family member—out of ignorance, out of misunderstanding, out of anger and prejudice.

Gay Sons and Mothers’ educational outreach is changing all that! For the past three years, Executive Director, Rick Miller LICSW, has been offering conversations, workshops, and presentations to organizations supporting LGBTQ+ training and awareness, enriching myriad diverse communities and—extraordinarily—enabling rapprochement, understanding, and healing to take place.

When Marcus first heard of Gay Sons and Mothers, the experience opened floodgates of emotion about his own relationship with his mother. Through participation in one of our workshops, he and his mother have finally, after twenty years of silence, started talking to each other about his identity. Gay Sons & Mothers has changed his life… and hers.

In GSM’s experience, the relationship between a gay man and his mother is one no one discusses, explores, or even acknowledges, despite affecting millions of lives.

We offer:

  • Mothers Who Inspire, a video series featuring live interviews with mothers of gay men who discuss the challenges and joys of their relationship.

  • Ongoing consultation with nonprofits providing LGBTQ+ education and support to offer them continuing education and resources.

  • A multicultural prism through which to understand relationships in different national, religious, and cultural communities, including the intersectionality of being LGBTQ+ and part of an ethnic group and finding or even creating acceptance in those places. GSM’s work contributes to and participates in innovative academic research.

  • Popular presentations on a myriad of topics, including Pride: Celebrate, Inform, and Inspire; The Pressure to be Resilient; Allyship: Thriving in the Company of Others; What Men Learn About Masculinity From Their Mothers; and many more.

  • Mother’s Day: curated videos of sons thanking their mothers.

  • The Mother Factor: Lessons Learned From Parenting Gay Sons, documentary film.

Gay Sons and Mothers is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Its board of directors includes professionals actively engaged in diversity and inclusion work through various educational, research, clinical, and nonprofit groups, as well as members of the arts community and three mothers of gay sons with various ethnic/religious backgrounds.

Gay Sons and Mothers welcomes partnerships and research collaborations with other LGBTQ+ organizations, as well as donations to help it continue this important work.
